Larian Studios Announce a New Divinity, Calling it Their Biggest RPG Ever

The speculation surrounding The Game Awards has been intense, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The secret has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio clarified that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team might be designing a more action-oriented experience rather than another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it sparked the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—traits that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs you can achieve by choosing a distinct build with a unique decision path.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, allowing players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be approached in multiple ways, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can look forward to another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
